Gum Disease / Periodontal Disease

Gum disease is often silent and, without proper therapy, is the leading cause for tooth loss for adults. Early stage periodontal disease, gingivitis, has few signs which include swelling, redness, or tenderness of the gums. Patients with gingivitis may also notice bleeding after they brush or floss their teeth. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis, where you lose the supporting foundation of the your teeth, the bone. Not only can periodontitis lead to bone loss and, ultimately, tooth loss but it is also linked to an increase risk of heart disease, stroke, pregnancy complications and problems for diabetics.

After a periodontal evaluation, Dr. Munz and her hygienist will recommend any therapy to arrest the disease. Some of these therapies include:

  • A deep cleaning to remove the hardened buildup and bacteria from below your gums
  • Root planing to smooth the root surface so bacteria has a difficult time attaching
  • A localized antibiotic therapy
  • In severe cases, Dr. Munz may refer you to a specialist called a Periodontist for more specialized care.
